Boquerones, the small fish at the heart of pescaíto frito.
SARDINES ON A CANE, OVER A FIRE IN A BOAT

Eating & Drinking

The food that belongs to this coast is fish, cooked simply, eaten on or near the sand.

The espeto

⭐ The dish of the Málaga coast is the espeto: sardines threaded on a cane skewer and grilled upright over an open wood fire — very often a fire built inside an old fishing boat filled with sand, on the beach in front of the bar.

It is a summer dish first, and the chiringuitos along the beaches are where to eat it.

Fried fish and cold soups

Pescaíto frito is the other constant — small fish, above all boquerones (fresh anchovies), dusted in flour and fried.

In the heat the province leans on cold soups: ajoblanco, made from almonds and garlic, and porra, a thick tomato soup from Antequera. In cooler months there is gazpachuelo, a Málaga fish soup thickened with mayonnaise.

How meals run

⚠️ Lunch is the main meal, and it runs well into the afternoon. Dinner starts late by most visitors' standards, and restaurants that open early for dinner are usually doing it for visitors.

The terraces on the Plaza de los Naranjos sell the setting. A few streets away in the old town, and in San Pedro, the eating is more local.
