The airport is Málaga's
Almost everyone arrives through Málaga airport, roughly 50 kilometers east along the coast. There is no airport in Marbella.
⚠️ The suburban train from the airport runs west only as far as Fuengirola. Marbella is further on, and the train does not go there.
From the airport
⭐ Direct coach. Coaches run from the airport straight to Marbella's bus station, which sits on the northern edge of the town by the motorway rather than in the center — you will need a short taxi or local bus from there to most hotels.
Taxi or pre-booked transfer. Door to door, and the least effort after a flight. A transfer booked in advance is met in the arrivals hall.
Car hire. Worth it if you are staying out along the coast, planning day trips or going up into the mountains; a burden if you are staying in the old town, where you cannot drive.
The two roads
Two roads run along this coast: the free A-7, which is the old coast road through every town, and the AP-7 toll motorway inland. ⚠️ In July and August the free road is slow, and the toll road is the one that keeps moving.
Other ways in
Gibraltar's airport is an alternative from the west. By rail from elsewhere in Spain, the high-speed line reaches Málaga, and the rest of the journey is by road. For a trip that also takes in Barcelona, the companion guide Barcelona Trip Guide covers that city.
Booking the practical bits

Three things that genuinely help on this trip: a driver waiting at Málaga airport, since there is no train to Marbella; somewhere to leave a bag between an early flight and an afternoon check-in; and a data plan that works before you reach the coach bay.
